Oldies Are The Best

Issue 57

Eco-friendly. Sustainability. Climate Conscious. Environmentally Friendly. Future Proofing.

Climate change is a trending daily topic. There has never been a more significant time to be accountable. We can ignore the science and the voices requesting us to make a change but where would that leave us? As a Mum I am filled with an unquantifiable need to protect my children and a need to make an impact to provide them with a brighter future. I am listening and learning from my children. As a Mum, business owner, homemaker etc I am consciously trying to adopt an eco-friendly lifestyle which isn’t always straight forward or easy, but I am trying.

Throw Away Industry

How does this ethos fit alongside my role as a wedding planner? I get asked frequently about the impact of the wedding industry. An industry renowned for excess and waste. A oneday event, never to be repeated.

I receive daily requests for guidance from Couple’s and families how they can make their wedding less damaging. How DO you make a wedding have a positive impact on climate change?

Something Old or Something New?

My little girl asked the sweetest most heartwarming question.

“Mammy, can I wear your wedding dress on my wedding day and then wouldn’t it be wonderful if my daughter could wear it too” and she continued as children do “and if it is still lovely my granddaughter, your great-grand-daughter could wear it. Wouldn’t that be really special Mammy?”

She said this as I plaited her wet hair ready for school the next day, she was facing away from me but the love and excitement in her tone was beautiful. I could hear the smile on her face. It made me feel all kinds of special and told her it would be a great honour.

Pre-loved

I then explained she had described an old wedding tradition. A tradition, I thought, which is not only eco-friendly but financially friendly too. A preloved tradition, drenched with all the memories of the previous wedding, making it so beautifully unique. A win-win situation!

It was an important question as it was a reminder to me that sometimes I/we need to look back to move forward. To adopt the patterns and behaviours of the past to bring about change for the future.

So, when I am designing the detail of a couple’s day I will be reminded to think, something old or something new?
